Easton Stealth Big Barrel Bats

What is a big barrel bat?
My son's baseball coach told us that we are now suppose to be using big barrel bats. What does he mean "big barrel"?

Little League and most baseball tournament organizations required that juniors and seniors (ages 13 and up) to use bats that have bigger barrels. For 12 and under Little League play, the bat barrel is 2 1/4 inches and has a weight to length ratio (or drop) typically around -9. These bats are lighter and small than high school bats.

When a player turns 13 yrs old and moves to the regulation size field, the bat rules change -- they can use big barrel bats. These bats have a barrel of 2 5/8 inches and a typical drop of -7 or -5. The heavier bats usually reduce a player's bat speed, due to the extra weight, for safety reasons. Many times these bats are labeled "Youth Senior League Bats" or "Youth Senior League Big Barrel Bats."

In high school, the bat rules change once again. High school athletic organizations require a bat drop to be -3 or less.

Although many parents don't like the idea of purchasing a $200+ bat that will only be used for 2 years, this is an important transition your son is going through. During this two year period, his physical strength will dramatically increase. But until it does, the youth big barrel bats will allow him to remain competitive at the plate.

What I did when my son was going through this transition, was to purchase an easton stealth youth senior league bat and then auction it at ebay when he was ready for the high school bat weight.
